Stan died at 78. My friend Brien Stevens said the good thing was he had a heart attack and went fast. I said bad thing is that he is not keeping old trains, old buildings, or old baseball players alive anymore.
We were members of a local SABR chapter. Twice I visited the Hall of Fame with him and other Gardner-Waterman chapter members. During the long trip from Burlington to Cooperstown, I would read trivia questions from Baseball Digest to the team. It was amazing how much knowledge Stan had about the game, especially when you factor in his reluctance to use computerized legal research and the fact he lived in VT, not exactly a hot corner for the summer game. Like name five pitchers to collect 340 strikeouts in a season or eight players who have won three or more batting titles since 1900, Bam! Bam! Bam! Not exactly stuff you study, yet alone remember. He knew all the guys on the plaques, filling in useful details left off the public displays.
Stan contributed a piece for The Green Mountain Boys of Summer, a book on VT major leaguers, edited by another member, Tom Simon, about Walt Lanfranconi, a little known VT player. Not sure Walt set any records, but Stan’s piece made you feel you knew the both of them.
