In a way I felt disappointed, but that is baseball is it not? Sandy Koufax could not find the plate in his early years. Of course, Sandy was brought up because the rules on bonus babies required that they be with the home team. Nowadays, phenoms, as Steven Strassberg has been called, can find themselves in the Show to fill seats in a stadium in a non-baseball city with lousy weather, mediocre talent, and a poor record. “First in war. First in Peace. Last in the American League.” He could, on the other hand, be the real deal. Last night, he wasn’t. Moreover, he showed he might not be.

I will give him credit for not having his best stuff, so he says. I will also put E on Desmond for booting the ball that could have helped get him out of the jam in the seventh and another E for Riegelman for not pulling him in the sixth. No matter that Desmond leads the league in errors and no one in the bull pen can get anyone out. Who you going to bring in, Brian Bruney? He will soon learn he cannot do it himself, also. Check out the stats. His team has scored one run in each of his last three starts. So, assuming he were to put some blame elsewhere, there is plenty of lime for the lines.

My real concern, however, is that he ain’t the real deal. Major leaguers can hit fastballs. As the commentators on ESPN pointed out, the Braves, who by the way sit in first place in the NL East, sat on the flat fastball. Strassberg avoided going inside, early, and missed when he tried to go down and in. Good throw by Willingham nailing Melke at the plate got him out of the first when everyone attacked his less than convincing control of the plate and every swing found the ball. He looked more mortal than mythical to me.
