Homeless Mike and Leroy Allen Skalstad, Milwaukee WI

The powers of the internet and social networking lay before me. Don’t realize the full potential as I start to expand my virtual world. Don’t have the time to learn all I would have had I been younger. But, then again, if I had the same growing pains that I experienced the first way through, I would have missed this round of technology promoting art, just like I missed the one that started in the 50’s.

I attended the opening of the show at Vermont Photo Space ostensibly to watch people look at Pete. Ken, the gallery owner and manager, handed me his cell phone, “one of your admirers wants to speak with you.” I took the phone.

“This is Leroy. I took the picture of Homeless Mike….”

We talked for a few minutes. Amazing. He served in Viet Nam. Came back with some baggage. Hassled by the system when he tried to get help. Lived on the street for a while. Met Mike when he was out there, alone and lost. Now, he tries to help those who are still out there.

Leroy and I exchanged info, Wired info. This morning I received an e-mail, “Hello Lorin, Thanks for the enjoyable chat at the Gallery, Your finely crafted image entitled Pete Knows really did set a visual dialog with me and was a personal reminder that we must never forget those who struggle in their day to day existance. Thanks again for sharing, Leroy Allen Skalstad.”

  1. I am out of words….not only because English isn’t my native language. I am beginning to have difficulties finding words describing what I think about this even in my own language.

  2. Someone I work with visits your blog regularly and recommended it to me to read as well. The writing style is superior and the content is interesting. Thanks for the insight you provide the readers!

  3. Thank you for writing about this. There’s a heap of good tech info on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs somewhat up-to-date, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a big job with this one. How do you do it?
